Peoria Riverfront Museum: Upcoming Events

Peoria Riverfront Museum is one of the best ways to get you through these last few weeks of cold weather in Central Illinois. In addition to the already stunning displays and exhibits, there are usually special activities going on each week ranging from lessons in fine glass blowing to tailgating under the stars.


Whatever your family is interested in, there’s no doubt that Peoria Riverfront Museum will have something to keep everyone entertained!

Here are a few upcoming events at the museum. Which event will you be penciling in on your calendar?


Fish Feeding at Illinois River Encounter

Saturday, March 1, 3 and 3:30 p.m.

Check out the museum’s 400-gallon fish tank and learn about the native species living in the Illinois River Encounter, while watching experts feed the fish. This event is free to members and with regular paid admission.


Lunch Break Learning: Fine Glass Blowing

Wednesday, March 5, 12:15–12:45 p.m.

Get out of the office for lunch and learn how studio glass is made. Jaremie Draper, local glass artists, will discuss the entire process. Lecture admission is $3 (does not include admission to galleries or planetarium).


YPGP March Social

Thursday, March 6, 5-7 p.m.

The Younger Professionals of Greater Peoria are hosting a network event at Peoria Riverfront Museum. The exhibits and planetarium shows will be available to those attending this “business after hours” event. This event is free for Interact Track and Visionary members and $5 for all other members. Wine and Cheese Under the Stars

Friday, March 7, 7-9 p.m.

White Oak Vineyards will be the featured winery at this unique event at Peoria Riverfront Museum. Relax, sip local wines and enjoy the starry view as the host takes you on a tour of the universe in the Dome Planetarium. This event costs $25 for members and $30 for others. Chemistry Demonstrations

Saturday, March 8, 1-2 p.m.

Bradley University Chemistry Club students will perform some amazing chemistry demonstrations that will have you excited about science. So stand back, watch out and prepare to be amazed by these innovative activities. This is free to members and with regular paid admission.


Central Illinois Youth Symphony Flute Choir Concert & Lecture

Sunday, March 9, 2 p.m.

Explore the Science of Music during and afternoon of fun, friends and beautiful music by the Central Illinois Youth Symphony Flute Choir. The director will explain how music helps students and what it takes for the group to be prepared for a performance. This event is free for Immerse Track and Visionary members, $5 for members and $8 for the public.

2014 Official Spring Home Show

As part of the largest home show in Central Illinois, more than 250 home improvement and remodeling companies will invade the Peoria Civic Center this upcoming weekend.

The 2014 Official Spring Home Show features everything for your home, both inside and out. Each year, round 20,000 local consumers make their way through Exhibitor Hall at the Peoria Civic Center to make buying decisions on new homes, remodeling and improvement purchases.

“Playing in Peoria” – Feb 20

We’re only a month away from the first day of spring! I know the cold temperatures seem never ending, but warmer weather is just around the corner. In fact, we’ve got a couple events in the Peoria Area picked out that will serve as a warm-up for the spring season.

Beer Brats & Tailgating Under the Stars

planetariumOn Friday, Feb. 21 from 7-9 p.m., Emeritus Director of Education and Curator of the Solar System, Sheldon Schafer, will be your guide on a tour of the universe in Peoria Riverfront Museum’s state-of-the-art Zeiss planetarium experience, where traditional tailgating will enter a new realm! Guests will be able to munch on brats, snacks and a variety of craft beers from Two Brothers Brewing in Warrenville, Ill throughout the tour of the universe.

Contemporary Art Center of Peoria Fine Art Live & Silent Auction

The 9th Annual Fine Art Auction will be held at the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria on Saturday, February 22. Live music, along with a fine food and cash bar will begin at 7 p.m., with the live auction beginning at 8 p.m.

Tickets to the event cost $15 for members and $25 for non-members. All of the proceeds will benefit the art center and its participants. For more information, head to the CAC website.


IHSA Speech Tournament

The 2014 IHSA Speech-Individual Events State Finals will take place on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22, at the Peoria Civic Center. This marks the 74th annual competition and the fifth year that the Civic Center has hosted the event.

Champions will be crowned in 14 events throughout the meet, including an overall team championship based on points. Admission is FREE to the public.

Bradley Basketball

Bradley University will unveil its new gargoyle mascot at the Peoria Civic Center when the Braves host Loyola Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. The Braves will also be inducting its newest Athletics Hall of Fame class during halftime.safe_image

Also, the Braves are offering a free ticket upgrade for the final two home games of the season. Fans wishing to take advantage of the upgrade should print out this voucher and present it at the Bradley Athletics Ticket Office in Renaissance Coliseum when buying a ticket. The offer is not valid for purchases at Carver Arena.

2014 Spring Home Show

This weekend, more than 250 companies occupying 450 booth spaces will make the 2014 Spring Home Show at the Peoria Civic Center the largest of its kind in Central Illinois. The show features everything for the home, inside and out, and all under one roof!

The show will be open on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m., on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs $7 for adults 18-and-over, $3.50 for Seniors and is free for those under the age of 18.

“Playing in Peoria” – Feb 12

Most people may be looking for Valentine’s Day events and ideas in this week’s edition of Playing in Peoria, but we already did that last week (CLICK HERE).

Instead, we are focusing on a few ideas for families and friends. Whether it’s a Rivermen game or tasting a little craft whiskey, Central Illinois has plenty going on to keep you busy this weekend.


Chicago Blackhawks Night

The Peoria Rivermen game on Saturday night, February 15, has been declared “Chicago Blackhawks Night.” As part of the celebration, the Rivermen are handing out Blackhawks-themed giveaways and there will be an appearance from Tony Esposito, Blackhawks Ambassador and Hockey Hall-of-Famer.


The first 1,000 fans to arrive will receive a 2013 Stanley Cup Champions team photo and one lucky fan will take home an autographed Patrick Sharp jersey.

The doors open at 6:05 p.m. and the puck drops at 7:15 p.m.


Peoria Jazz All-Stars at Landmark

The Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band will is performing at Landmark on Sunday, February 16. The Peoria Jazz All-Stars will kick off the night at 7:15 p.m. in the Starting Gate Banquet Room. Admission costs are $5 for members, $7 for non-members and free for students.

What can you create with just one piece of paper? Come to the Peoria Riverfront Museum this weekend and find out for yourself. The “Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami” features 100 works by more than 40 artists from 13 countries.

Oliver at Peoria Players Theatre

This musical is based on the novel “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens. The show is full of emotion and drama, while giving the audience an entertaining performance featuring some musical theatre classics.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the show begins at 7:30 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled for Sunday, February 16. Tickets can be purchased a the Peoria Players website or box office.


J.K. Williams Tours and Tastings

Stop by the J.K. Williams Distillery this weekend for an educational tour and to sample several products. The doors are opened to the public on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The distillery tours will be held each half hour.

Just one taste of the high-quality craft whiskey and bourbon will have you convinced of the bootlegger tradition passed down through generations.

The Hive

Whether you’re looking to improve your artistic abilities, entertain your friends or host a special event, The Hive in downtown Peoria will get your creativity buzzing!

Located in the Contemporary Art Center at 305 Water St. on the Peoria riverfront, The Hive offers public art classes for all ages. Each class has a “thread of healthy living and/or environmental stewardship” to promote the mission of “living in harmony with the planet.”

Hive Class 


The Hive offers a variety of classes for children, teens, adults, seniors and special needs. From $10 Happy Art to classes for experienced artists, they offer activities to fit every budget.

Kids Introduction To Art: From 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays, The Hive will host children between 10 and 14 and give an introduction to various techniques and mediums. This class is a 12-week session that began on January 25th and ends on April 12th. This class is also offered on Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. to allow for make-ups. The cost includes all materials and costs $165 for all 12 weeks, but $15 per the remaining sessions for late entries.

hive kidsHappy Art: Beginning on February 28, join The Hive each Friday from 5-8 p.m. for a “self-directed” art session enhanced with background music courtesy of “Live at the Five Spot.” The price starts at $10 and includes all supplies for the activities. Beverages and food is available from Rhythm Kitchen, but feel free to bring your own snacks. According to The Hive’s website, “Bring your enthusiasm and you are good to go!”


Upcoming Classes

Paint The Label (Feb 12, 6-8 p.m.): This is the perfect class for a unique date! Choose from several empty wine bottles and recreate the labels on a canvas. After your finished, grab a flower and enjoy your knew bottle vase. The class costs $25, including all materials.

Sweetheart Night (Feb 14, 7:30-9:30 p.m.): Still looking for the perfect Valentine’s date? The Hive has just what you’re looking for. Each couple will paint two canvases that will be hung together to create one piece, along with a wooden photo frame for the photo taken of each couple during the class. Light snacks will be provided, but food and beverages will also be available from Rhythm Kitchen.

Photography Workshop (Feb 16, 1:30 – 4 p.m.): Stop by for an awesome afternoon designed to help you learn more about your camera. Nick Goodin will teach participants to take better photos and get the most out of the camera they paid for! The majority of the time will be spent actually shooting and reviewing the photos taken.


Private Parties

As I mentioned earlier, The Hive is also a great venue for the special events in your life. When the schedule is opened, The Hive is available for a variety of parties, including wedding showers, bachelorette parties, graduation open houses, offsite meetings and birthday parties.hive private event

The space can accommodate 24-30 people, seating guests at three large round tables. When you reserve the space, a class can be developed around any theme you could imagine. All materials is provided for painting classes. Private sessions are $35 per person, with a 10-painter minimum to remain a private event.

Birthday parties for children start at $150 for 10 people and a theme-related art activity, with each extra guest costing $10. Painting parties are $175 for 10 people, with extra guests being $12.50

Learn about the “facts of life” in the animal kingdom at The Peoria Zoo on Saturday, February 17 from 2-4 p.m. From videos to meeting animals up close, this will give you a whole new perspective on the complicated, beautiful and sometimes-bizarre courtship rituals of the animal kingdom!

Wildlife Prairie Park

The “Wild About Love” event at Wildlife Prairie Park includes a giveaway for one special couple to the Cabin on the Hill! The night will include an open bar from 6-7 p.m., a five-course meal, gifts for all the couples and even a dance floor for only $150 per couple.


Luthy Botanical Gardens

Celebrate Valentine’s Day a bit early and in a special way with friends or your true love with an evening of music, food, wine and roses! “Wine and Roses” is being held at the Tropical Conservatory, featuring music by Joe Metzka Trio, appetizers, desserts and a cash bar.
